The Western South Dakota Juveniles Services Center (JSC) is an accredited facility seeking Juvenile Correctional Officer applicants. JSC Officers supervise the day-to-day activities of detainees while ensuring safety and security. Officers also assist with programming. Please visit ourwebsite to learn more about our operation.

The facility is operated around the clock; therefore, shift assignments will include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Correctional Officers are provided with initial classroom and on-the-job training.

Position Functions

  • Performing suicide watch visual checks and other required visual checks
  • Interacting with and documenting juvenile behavior
  • Maintaining crisis prevention supervision and applying non-violent crisis intervention techniques
  • Responding to emergencies and acting as a member of a response team able to restrain out-of-control detainees
  • Writing detailed reports documenting various situations or incidents
  • Orienting juveniles to rules, programs, and procedures
  • Encouraging positive behavior and applying disciplinary sanctions for rule violations
  • Dispensing approved medication and documenting same
  • Encouraging, documenting and leading residents in daily activities and programs
  • Documenting behavior observations on an on-going basis
  • Referring to Corporal or Sergeant regarding detainee requests or needs
  • Role modeling appropriate behavior by treating all with dignity and respect
  • Attending meetings and trainings as required.
  • Performing other duties a assigned

Qualifications

Age:Successful candidates must be 20 years of age

Education:HS Diploma or GED required

Experience: None required

License / Certification: SD Driver's License (within 90 days of moving to SD)

Criminal History : No felony conviction

Hiring Process

Physical Agility Test: This physical agility test is designed to test a person's physical strength, muscular endurance, coordination and agility by performing basic physical tasks.

Written Exam: Candidates must pass the EMPCO written exam, which is designed to measure cognitive ability, observational skills, and mental acuity. There is a $25 fee to the applicant to take this exam. While passing the written exam is mandatory, it is not a guarantee of a job.

Panel Interview: The Interview panel will interview the top candidates. The panel will be made up of representatives from the Sheriff's Office.

Background Investigation: A complete and thorough background investigation will be conducted on each candidate to whom a conditional offer of employment has been extended. The purpose of the background investigation is to assist the department in determining a candidate's suitability for employment.

Psychological Evaluation: A qualified psychologist will conduct a complete and thorough evaluation. Each candidate will be administered a variety of psychological tests, the purpose of which will be to identify a variety of personality, emotional, and psychological characteristics, traits, qualities, attributes and tendencies.

Medical Evaluations: A complete and thorough medical evaluation will be conducted on each candidate to whom a conditional offer of employment has been extended. A licensed physician will conduct the exam. The medical exam will be conducted for the purpose of ensuring that a candidate possesses the general health status necessary to perform the essential job functions of a Law Enforcement Officer.

Candidates must pass all medical, physical, written, and psychological examinations. Candidates can be disqualified at any time during the hiring process at the discretion of the Chief Deputy, Human Resources Hiring Manager or The Sheriff.
