South Dakota Mines is seeking a Research Scientist II in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to work the new NSF RII-T1 project (#1849206). Project details can be found below: https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?WD_ID=1849206&HistoricalAwards=false

The 2D-BEST researcher will develop rationally designed 2D coatings, with a primary goal of tuning surface properties that influence biofilm phenotypes on metal surfaces. The researcher will develop engineered 2D coatings on metal surfaces for subsequent use in biology experiments. The candidate researcher will assess the effects of surface properties on microenvironments in biofilms grown on 2D surfaces exposed to biofilms of sulfate reducing bacteria. The candidate will use microscopy and spectroscopy techniques to characterize the pristine and exposed forms of 2D coatings. The experiments will be designed to assess how the nano-scale heterogeneity of surface properties impact microenvironments in biofilms. The researcher will carry out independent research, provide an expert guidance to the juniors, collaborate with peers in the team, and contribute to journal publications and grant proposals.

We are seeking candidates with a strong background in material-microbe interactions and 2D material synthesis and characterization, The candidate is expected to have a prior strong experience in a suite of surface characterization techniques including optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, contact angle measurements, electron backscatter diffraction, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy and FTIR. The candidate should meet the following requirements: 1) must have a Ph.D. degree in civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering or related degree by the start date; 2) must demonstrate an ability to use microscopy and spectroscopy techniques for assessing cell attachment and biofilm growth on rationally designed 2D coatings; 3) have experimental skills in 2D material synthesis and characterization; 4) guide undergraduate and graduate students, 5) have a publication record in fields including material-microbe interactions and 2D materials.
