South Dakota Mines is searching for a part-time SD-FIRST program coordinator to be part of the Student Success Center administrative team. This is a non-benefited, part-time position approximately 10 hours per week. The SD-FIRST program coordinator will manage the functions of the National Science Foundation S-STEM program which is focused on the recruitment and retention of first-generation students on the SD Mines campus. The program coordinator oversees the primary objectives for the project, which are to: (1) aid the admissions office and the SD-FIRST team in the recruitment and selection of academically talented first-generation students that satisfy program criteria with financial need and a commitment to an engineering, science, or technology discipline; (2) together with the SD-FIRST team, develop programmatic elements specific for first-generation students to provide academic, social, and economic support through these elements; (3) serve as a mentor to participants within the program as well as meet with them routinely throughout the academic year; and (4) provide guidance for staff and faculty on interactions and unique challenges with this student population.

In addition, the program coordinator will work with the certified emotional intelligence administrator and the external evaluator to oversee the program assessments, which will examine participants' level of emotional intelligence and the effect of program elements on persistence.

A bachelor's degree is required along with 1 to 3 years of related experience; a master's degree is preferred. Candidates should have a background and/or interest in education, higher education, student services, mentoring, and related fields. The position also requires some travel, a valid driver's license, and occasional irregular work hours a few times per month.
