Registered Nurse - PICU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty:
Pediatrics Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Variable Hours per
Shift: 36 Experience: 1.5 years general nursing experience required
License: Registered Nurse (RN) - Board of Nursing Certifications:
BLS, PALS, NIHSS Must-Have: PICU experience is required
Description: 15 bed Pediatric Unit; 5 Bed PICU. Candidates must
have a minimum of 1.5 years of general nursing experience.
First-time travelers will be accepted if they have greater than 2
years of experience. Patients are ages 0-18 and may include adults
in stable condition. Diagnoses include respiratory illness,
diabetes, septicemia, cellulitis, hyperbilirubinemia,
neglect/abuse, mental health, trauma, neurology, and general
surgeries. General surgeries may consist of ear/nose/throat,
gastrointestinal, urological, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and
trauma. Advanced care patients include those requiring critical or
intensive care services. Common conditions in Advanced Care
Pediatrics include chronic respiratory insufficiency, circulatory
failure, infectious diseases, endocrine and metabolic disorders,
and more. Patient ratios are 1:5 for General Pediatrics and 1:1-2
for Advanced Care Pediatrics. Physical assessment of patients
ranging from newborns to adults is required. Nurses will evaluate
patient symptoms and vital signs and administer medications as
prescribed. Education for patients and families on the plan of care
is essential. Proficient use of the electronic health record system
is expected. Candidates must be able to titrate drips and care for
mechanically ventilated patients. Support on the unit includes a
charge nurse, nursing assistants, and other healthcare
professionals. RNs will start their own IVs with additional support
available if needed. Schedule includes a weekend rotation and
potential on-call responsibilities. Holiday work is expected, and
time off must be pre-approved. The work culture emphasizes an
