Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Pediatrics Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12 Hour Variable Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience required, with a preference for candidates having more than 2 years of experience. License: Registered Nurse (RN) - state board of nursing. Certifications: Required certifications include BLS and PALS. NIHSS is not required. Must-Have: Candidates must have skills in physical assessment of patients aged 0 to adult, evaluating patient symptoms and vital signs, administering medications, and educating patients and families on the plan of care. Proficiency in EPIC charting system is necessary. Experience in PICU, ability to titrate drips, and care for mechanically ventilated patients is required. Description: General information: The unit has a capacity of 15 beds for pediatric care and 5 beds for advanced care pediatrics. Patient types include pediatrics ranging from 0 to 18 years of age and adult overflow. Common diagnoses may include respiratory illnesses, diabetes, septicemia, cellulitis, hyperbilirubinemia, neglect/abuse, mental health issues, trauma, neurological conditions, and general surgeries. Advanced care pediatrics patients represent those requiring critical or intensive care services. Common disease entities include acute and chronic respiratory insufficiency, circulatory failure, infectious diseases leading to major organ system dysfunction, endocrine and metabolic disorders, neurologic diseases, toxic ingestions/exposures, trauma, and hematologic and oncologic diseases. Patient ratios are as follows: general pediatrics is 1:5, while advanced care pediatrics is 1:1-2. Support on the unit includes CNAs with a ratio of 1:5, and there is one charge nurse covering both units in a free-floating capacity. RNs and Nurse Aids are responsible for laboratory draws, and RNs initiate their own IVs with ultrasound assistance for difficult cases. Resource support includes nurse clinicians, nurse educators, case management, social work, respiratory therapy, and pediatric pharmacy. Charting system used is EPIC with Omnicell equipment. Floating may occur to NICU, which has a 30-bed capacity with a 1:3 ratio. Orientation consists of one day of facility orientation with online and in-person training, followed by two days of unit orientation with a preceptor. Scheduling involves a weekend rotation every other weekend. Staff may be placed on low census/on call. Holiday work expectations include all major holidays, with approval of time off required to be pre-approved. The work culture promotes a friendly, traveler-oriented environment.
